Rug Size Guide for Living Rooms and Bedrooms

Area rugs fail most often because they are too small for the furniture group they are asked to define. A 4×6 rug in front of a full sofa reads as an afterthought. A correctly sized rug makes the seating or the bed look planned.

In a living room, start with the sofa. At minimum, the front legs of the sofa and of the principal chairs should rest on the rug. A more finished arrangement places the entire seating group on the rug, with eight to twelve inches of rug showing beyond the coffee table on all sides. Common U.S. sizes for this purpose are 8×10 and 9×12. A 5×7 can work in a tight apartment if the sofa is compact and only the front legs sit on the rug. It will not carry a sectional.

Leave a border of bare floor around the rug if the room allows it—generally four to eighteen inches from the wall. A rug that is wall-to-wall in a small room can be correct; a rug that stops awkwardly in the middle of a walkway is not. Align the rug with the main architecture of the room, not with a television stand that may move.

In a bedroom, the bed is the measuring point. For a queen bed, an 8×10 rug placed perpendicular to the bed, extending beyond the nightstands or stopping just short of them, is a standard solution. A 6×9 can frame a queen if it is centered and allowed to show on both sides and at the foot. Twin rooms and nurseries often use a 5×7 or a round rug beside the bed rather than under it. Do not hide the entire rug under the bed. The purpose is a landing strip of textile where a person steps out.

Dining rooms follow the chair, not the tabletop. The rug should remain under the chair legs when the chair is pulled out. That usually means the rug is at least two feet larger than the table on every side. A 8×10 under a six-chair rectangular table is a typical match; a 5×7 is not.

Round rugs belong in square rooms, under round tables, or as a defined island in an open plan. They are a poor substitute for a rectangular rug in a long, narrow living room.

Write the furniture dimensions down before you shop. Room photos on a website are shot with wide lenses. The tape measure in your room is the specification that matters.
